Abstract Scholars have long recognized the considerable importance of Armenian sources—particularly the accounts of Movses Khorenatsi—for the study of the ancient history of Media and Iran. Armenian sources take on particular significance when systematically compared with evidence preserved in the works of ancient Greek and Latin authors. In this respect, Khorenatsi’s accounts are at times comparable to those in classical sources, while in other instances they reveal historical realities concerning Armenian–Median and Armenian–Iranian relations. The present article focuses on Khorenatsi’s accounts of Anoysh and Tigranuhi, the women associated with Astyages, king of Media.
